Driving Lessons Gloucester - Operation Snap.

We've all watched social media channels and seen videos and other pictures of crazy and illegal driving and some of us have been victims of the mindless actions of others. Cyclists, pedestrians, horse riders, and learner drivers probably get the worst of it, but unpleasant encounters can come out of the blue to anybody on the road.
What can we do about it?
Affordable technology in the form of Dashboard Cameras for cars, Helmet Cameras for cyclists, motorbikes and horse riders and Handlebar Cameras for bikes and motorbikes are starting to make a difference, as evidence gathered on this equipment can be used to prosecute and deter offenders.
The problem is that there are 45 police forces across the UK and they do not accept and deal with the evidence in a consistent manner, which can make it difficult to get properly heard in some areas.
However, four police forces in Wales have got together and launched Operation Snap, and they are supported by the Crown Prosecution Service.
Members of the public can submit and upload video and other images of road traffic offences they have witnessed and recorded on their devices, directly online (see the Operation Snap link) and the police will take action where an offence has been committed.
To quote Inspector Steve Davies of South Wales Police:
"Police officers cannot be everywhere, as much as they try, but with Operation Snap the police could be anywhere."
He went on to say:
"We want drivers to ask themselves two questions: firstly, am I being recorded? Secondly, do I really want to take that chance?"
The creation of Operation Snap in Wales demonstrates that police forces can combine and work a system that meets all of their standards, so hopefully it will be rolled out across the UK in the near future.
It could lead to a dramatic improvement in road safety.

Across England and Wales, road traffic policing has dropped by nearly 50% outside London, while overall officer numbers have only fallen by 12%. Cash-strapped forces need to be smarter with how they use their limited resources, so taking advantage of new technology and citizen reporting makes sense.
A single standard and portal would take the burden of finding the right force away from the witness, while also creating desperately-needed consistency for evidence submission. It would also be a step towards addressing apparent inconsistency in the interpretation of the law, not just by different police forces but also within the same force.
An example is the differing approaches taken by Essex Police in two recently reported cases.

Driving Lessons Gloucester - Driving Test Pass- Alicia Taylor of Hucclecote,Gloucester,18th December 2017.

Christmas congratulations to Alicia Taylor of Hucclecote, Gloucester on her first time driving test pass on December 18th, 2017, at Gloucester Driving Test Centre, with her driving instructor, Tom Lowe.

She had an excellent, confident drive, which resulted in her test pass, and was justifiably over the moon with her achievement.

Alicia was due to take her driving test at the end of November, but unfortunately the test was cancelled at short notice, meaning that she would have to sit the new style driving test, which came in on December 4th.

Alicia said that she felt confident though as her instructor, Tom Lowe, had gone through the changes and new manouevres with her.

Alicia also said she very much enjoyed her lessons with Tom and would highly recommend John Lowe Driving school.

Tom sends his best wishes and all of us at John Lowe Driving wish Alicia a happy Christmas, welcome her to the first time pass club and thank her for using our driving school.

Warm Regards,

Driving Lessons Gloucester - Have fun at Christmas, not this!

Nearly 300 new drivers have received automatic driving bans for using their mobile phones as they drive, because the law was toughened up earlier in the year.
Last March, 2017, the penalty for using your phone whilst driving was increased to six penalty points, which is enough to get you a driving ban if you have less than two years full licence experience.
To regain your licence means retaking and passing both the theory and hazard tests and the driving test itself. What a drag!
Remember the time and money it cost you to qualify in the first place, so keep your phone in the glove box, use a "do not disturb" app, or keep it switched off when you are driving.
Your phone will be busier at this time of the year, with friends getting in touch, so resist it while you are on the road. Keep it safe, minimise the risk!
Warm Regards,
Tom Lowe.

Driving Lessons Gloucester - A Driving Instructor Review from Jess Barker ADI - 25th September 2017.

"I have been a driving instructor for 5 months with John Lowe Driving, and could not recommend a better driving school to work for.

Tom Lowe, who is the school owner, gave me top-rate training to get me through the "part 3" tests, which are the "finals" for the full driving instructor qualification and are very demanding. Tom now offers me continual support and guidance, so I can deliver driving lessons to the same high standard as himself.

John Lowe Driving has great franchise deals, so fees are extremely fair and everybody benefits. The number of students that I teach has tripled since joining the team, and Lisa makes sure I am never without business.

Working for a school with such a great reputation makes going to work easy and teaching my students to drive, a lot of fun!
Thanks, Tom and Lisa!"

Driving Lessons Gloucester - DVSA Warns of Examiners Strike.

DVSA driving examiners and vehicle testing staff, who are members of the PCS, (Public and Commercial Services Union) are currently being balloted for industrial action.

This is a long running dispute over travel time, health and safety and further changes to their terms and conditions.

The DVSA intends to give managers the ability to deploy staff anywhere they choose, without notice, creating a "flexible working" regime. Staff would be expected to travel to these deployments in their own time.

It is said that these arrangements could mean that workers could end up effectively working the equivalent of an extra day each week for free.

This stalemate has been in the process since 2015, with PCS claiming that DVSA and the Department for Transport still refuse to resolve the issues.

Oh well! Life goes on, but the sooner this can be sorted out, the better, especially with the driving test changes rapidly approaching.

Warm Regards,
Tom Lowe.

Driving Lessons Gloucester, - ADI Part 3 Changes Have Been Delayed.

The changes to the ADI Part 3 assessment will not now take place on October 2nd 2017, as the Government Legal Department cannot meet the final deadline in time.

The DVSA has decided to delay the implementation date and are hoping things will be in place to make the changes later in October 2017.

This obviously causes problems and anxiety for PDI's who have their part 3 test booked in the first couple of weeks of October.
These people will be contacted by the DVSA and will be given the choice of postponing their test to a later date, or keeping their test date and taking their test in the current format of pre-set tests.

It's a dilemma and a difficult decision, but probably the best approach would be to take the test that relates to the training that has been undertaken.

If any of you out there in the Gloucester area overcome these hurdles and pass your part 3, we are always on the lookout for quality driving instructors, manual or automatic, and have a great working atmosphere with plenty of students waiting to get started.

You will always be busy with John Lowe Driving.

Call us on 01452 313713 if you would like to join us.

Tom Lowe,

Driving Lessons Gloucester - Learner Drivers To Be Allowed To Use Motorways.

It has been announced in the last few days that students learning to drive a car will be allowed to practice on the motorways from 2018. The exact date has yet to be decided.

In this post we will look at how the approach to this major change will be handled by the driving instructors here at John Lowe Driving.

Firstly, we need to get some facts straight!

Motorway driving will not become part of the driving test and this has nothing to do with the driving test changes that are coming on December 4th 2017.

The DVSA are allowing motorway use for learners to ensure that more drivers can use the motorways properly and safely.

However there are conditions attached!

Learner drivers will have to be accompanied by a fully qualified approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car, displaying "L" plates. Trainee driving instructors will not be able to offer motorway lessons, nor will friends and family.

Motorway lessons will not be compulsory and it will be up to the approved driving instructor to decide if the student is competent enough to use the motorway, but will never pressurise anybody to have a motorway lesson, it will be completely voluntary.

Our driving instructors will ensure the following is incorporated in motorway lessons:

  • Full two way discussion on motorway procedures.
  • Joining and leaving the motorway.
  • Use of lanes and lane discipline.
  • Overtaking safely.
  • Use of speed. Reminder that motorway speeds can vary. Students from the Gloucester area will have already practised a lot on the local dual carriageways, so getting up to speed will not be too challenging.
  • Dealing with breakdowns and the use of the hard shoulder. How to find and use emergency phones. Reminder that the hard shoulder is sometimes used as a lane.
  • Safely dealing with spray in wet weather. The instructor will decide on the safety of a motorway lesson if the weather is poor.
  • How to use the 2 second rule.
  • Motorway signs.
A lot of drivers do not use motorways for a number of reasons and so miss out on the great advantages they offer.
Don't be one of them!

Have your driving lessons with John Lowe Driving and get the full package.

Call us on 01452 313713.

Warm Regards,
Tom Lowe.

Driving Lessons Gloucester - Motorway Lesson with Will Bees from the Forest of Dean, 24/07/17.

It was a pleasure to meet up again with Will Bees, for a motorway lesson. Will had passed his driving test a short while ago and was keen to take a motorway lesson to gain some experience and confidence.

We had a two hour motorway lesson, which we started with a talk through of the main points of motorway driving. We then agreed a plan and set off to put it into practice.
We drove down the M5 from Gloucester to Cribs Causeway in Bristol and then turned around and came back up to Tewkesbury and then back on to Gloucester.

Will said it had given him lots of practice in joining and exiting the motorway and that he felt confident in lane use, use of speed and overtaking safely. He was pleased with the practice and says that he now feels confident enough to take some summer road trips out around the country using the motorways.

Well done Will, and enjoy the freedom of the roads!

Driving Lessons Gloucester - Driving Test Pass - Jo Whitehead of Gloucester, 10th July, 2017

Congratulations to Jo Whitehead of Innsworth, Gloucester, who passed her driving test with her instructor, Jess Barker, at Gloucester Driving Test Centre on July 10th 2017.

Jo had a poor experience with a different driving school a few years ago, and was extremely apprehensive about starting her driving lessons again, having very little confidence in the process.

Happily, things changed when she teamed up with Jess and with hard work and targeted practice, she has achieved her desired result!

Passing the driving test was very important to Jo, as she's moving at the end of the month and having earned her full driving licence means that she can drive herself to her new job. What a brilliant result!

Jess sends her best wishes and all of us at John Lowe Driving wish Jo the very best for the future and thank her for using our driving school.
