Driving Lessons Gloucester- Customer Review- Freya Savage of Gloucester.

"My driving lessons are going really well with John Lowe Driving and I get on very well with my driving instructor, Martyn Brewer. I've had about 10 lessons so far and seem to have covered an awful lot and I feel more confident each time. This is my first attempt at driving and I chose John Lowe Driving School because other students at Denmark Road sixth form said how good they are. Martyn has got me studying for my theory test already, there's a lot to cover, so I'm pleased I have started early. Having driving lessons helps a lot with the theory work, and it's going well."

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Learner Drivers may be Allowed on UK Motorways.

The Department of Transport have announced that learner drivers may be allowed to drive on UK motorways with the supervision of an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in a dual controlled car. Motorways are statistically the safest of roads, but can cause a lot of anxiety for many drivers.
Some areas have busy dual carriageways that learner drivers have to deal with on their driving lessons, such as Gloucester, so learner drivers from these areas will be familiar with the higher speeds and safety requirements that will be needed on a motorway. However, go to Cheltenham and these roads are not really in range, so students from this area will be new to the different level of driving, and may find motorway and even dual carriageway driving quite daunting after they have passed their driving test.
If the new rules are introduced, and learner drivers are allowed onto the motorway, the driving instructors at John Lowe Driving will make sure that any student is fully prepared before the motorway practice.

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Winter Solstice- Driving at Night.

Today is the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. The nights will be getting shorter from tomorrow, but if you are not used to driving in the darkness, or are just not confident in the dark, here are some tips that will help you.
Judgement of distance and speed becomes harder at night because of the reduced visibility and other unfamiliar distractions. You may not have done any night driving on your driving lessons, so at first, take it easy. If you can't stop within the range of your vision, then slow down.
Before you go out, make sure your lights work. You will have done these checks on your driving lessons and your driving instructor will have made sure that you know what to check. Check that your headlights, stop lights and windscreens are not dirty.
Turn on your dipped headlights in good time, before it gets really dark, and be sure you know how to use your main beam headlights should you need them. Again, you will have covered this on your driving lesson.
When you are out at night, stay calm, and read the road around you, as things that are familiar in the daylight, can be a surprise in the darkness. As always, keep things safe, and if you feel uncomfortable, pull over somewhere safe, keep your lights on, and relax for a moment until you feel ready to proceed.
Remember, your driving instructor at John Lowe Driving will always be available for any further advice.

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Christmas Charity 2015.

It is around this time of the year that John Lowe Driving chooses a charity, or good cause to support. This year we have decided on a new charity, based in Gloucester called The Beacon. The Beacon has been set up by Carrie Godwin, to help people in the local community who suffer with depression. Their aim is to provide a safe and relaxing place to visit, to learn about the biology of depression, introduce anti-stress techniques, mindfulness and effective coping strategies. They will also run sessions of arts, crafts, performing arts, and cookery, to name a few of their ideas.
They are hosting a meet and greet coffee morning on January 14th 2016, between 9am and 11am, at the Ramblers/Podsmead Community Centre, Milton Ave, Podsmead, Gloucester, GL25AS.
If you need to make contact before the coffee morning, here are the details:

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Taxi Driver Strike Threat.

Taxi drivers in Gloucester have been told they must retake their driving tests every 10 years – at their own expense. The tests are currently priced at £112. New rules imposed mean that the testing will be carried out by the DVSA.
Some drivers are apparently not achieving the standard, and are failing the test, and this has caused threats of strike action by some taxi drivers.
It's not unusual for professional drivers to be standard checked to ensure decent standards and public safety. LGV drivers, forklift drivers, ambulance drivers etc are checked regularly and driving instructors are checked at least every 4 years by the DVSA, sometimes more often.
If your driving or instruction is up to the required standard then there is nothing to fear, but if not, then there is every opportunity to reach the standard with further training. Surely professional pride would be the only motivation needed to reach the standard, and impress the public.
All hackney carriage and private hire drivers licensed to the authority to operate in the city must take tests by October next year.

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Should Elderly Drivers be Retested?

There have been some news articles lately, discussing whether to introduce retesting for drivers over the age of 70. This is a more complex subject than it first appears. At present, drivers over age 70 in the UK must fill in a self-assessment form every three years to renew their licences. The form doesn't include a medical or driving test. This system has worked reasonably well, but there are always going to be cases that make the news when an elderly driver becomes involved in a serious accident.
It is not really the age that is the problem, but driving ability. Far more accidents are caused by drivers aged under 25 than those aged over 70.
Any retesting would have to go through legislation, and with many lawmakers and their colleagues and families approaching the age where retesting would occur, probably makes the idea dead in the water. Who would vote for a system where they could deprive themselves of their driving licence? Turkeys voting for Christmas?

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Customer Review- Becky Greenwood of Gloucester.

"I'm so pleased that I changed to John Lowe Driving. I had been with two other driving schools which were awful. One of them was a big national company, which was so disorganised, there were times that nobody knew when my next lesson was, or which driving instructor I would get. I had several different instructors and they seemed to disappear, or leave and I was the last person to know. I packed up with them and went to a local female instructor, and she was just as bad. She would change my lesson at the last minute, expect me to drive her around while she ran errands and even had her dog in the car, jumping around. I was losing heart when a friend recommended John Lowe Driving. I phoned up and Lis was so helpful and assured me that I would always be treated with respect. My driving instructor is Tom Lowe and he is professional, friendly and punctual. My driving is improving fast each lesson and Tom has said that I should be ready for my driving test early next year. I'm so pleased!"

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Customer Review- Jake Howell of Gloucester.

"My driving instructor, Martyn Brewer, has just introduced me to the subject of roundabouts, something that always looked pretty confusing. His explanations about approach speed, where to look, who has priority, and danger zones has made it all a lot clearer, and I'm a lot more confident now. Martyn kind of drew the information out of me and I realised that I knew a lot of the way roundabouts work, without realising it, and this has helped a lot. We are both Liverpool fans and that adds something we have in common, to very enjoyable driving lessons."

Driving Lessons Gloucester- DVSA Examiners' Strike.

A vote has been taken by Driving Test Examiners to take a two day strike action in a dispute over working hours. The dates for this strike action are Thursday 19th and Friday 20th November 2015. This will obviously do absolutely nothing to ease the excessive waiting lists at a lot of driving test centres, but that is not the fault of the ordinary examiners. We can only hope that a reasonable agreement can be reached and all get back to normal.

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Customer Review-James Blackmore-Doddings of Upton St. Leonards.

"I've had my first five driving lessons with John Lowe Driving and I'm pleased with the progress I have made so far. My driving instructor, Martyn Brewer, started me off with a controls lesson to introduce me to the car and the use of the controls and mirrors. Since then, I can move off safely, stop safely, steer properly, change up and down gears, and cope with some junctions. I feel more confident each lesson and am starting to prepare for my theory test. There's a lot to do, but Martyn says the first five lessons are among the hardest and I'm through that now."

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Customer Review- Anna Stec of Cheltenham.

"During my driving lesson today, we came off the road to practise the show me, tell me questions. My driving instructor, John Lowe, says it is safer and calmer off the road, when you are standing outside the car, looking under the bonnet and at the lights and tyres. I drove into a car park and reversed into a parking bay to look at the car, and I was really pleased with my accuracy. They do not do this manouevre in Cheltenham, where I will take my driving test, as they do not have the facilities, but John has shown me how to do it anyway. He said it's not just about the driving test, and I'm pleased I can bay park as well."http://www.drivinglessonsgloucester.org

Driving Lessons Gloucester- Driving and Theory Test changes on the way.

Some more information is emerging from the DVSA, regarding the changes to the driving and theory tests, which are on the way.

Routes will be used that will stretch the driving test candidates, exposing them to varying traffic conditions that will demand sound judgement. This requires students being trained to a higher standard and spending more time on high-risk roads testing the ability of the test candidates to cope with priorities and deal with distractions.
There will be a ‘show me’ question on the move; the emergency stop will continue to be carried out as it is now; there will be one manoeuvre including the proposed drive into a parking bay and reverse out and also the pull up on the right, reverse and drive on; and an independent drive of twenty minutes with ‘sat nav’ and also possibly following road signs.

The driving instructors at John Lowe Driving will be fully trained to deliver these new standards, so rest assured that when these changes come into force, we will be ready to help you through.

The hazard perception test is evolving as well. The clips will include more vulnerable road users in the short term and then the medium term will consider adverse weather conditions and driving at night. In the longer term the theory test may go onto include case studies on scenarios and journey planning.

Also, some changes to the theory test:
As part of the Theory Test, learners must often select multiple answers for a single question – but for car-themed questions, this is now no longer the case. Instead, learners will only need to select a single answer from a selection of multiple choice answers; this change has affected 129 questions, examples of which include:
What can cause excessive or uneven tyre wear?
What is an effect of drinking alcohol?

You arrive at a serious motorcycle crash. The motorcyclist is unconscious and bleeding. What should you do to help them?

Theory Test Pro, available on our website, http://www.drivinglessonsgloucester.org, has these updates already included, and is a great place to get used to everything.

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Customer Review- Tom Whichelo of Gloucester.

"I am quite new to driving, but I'm pleased to be getting on really well. My driving instructor, Martyn Brewer, has said that I am now ready to start practising the reverse manouevres and I'm looking forward to that. Martyn and me had a chat about reversing on my last driving lesson and we agreed to make reversing the subject of my next driving lesson. Martyn is a great driving instructor and I chose John Lowe Driving because of their reputation and reviews.

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Customer Review- Damon Mayo of Gloucester.

"I've been having my driving lessons with John Lowe Driving for a little while now, and my driving instructor, Martyn Brewer, has told me that I'm doing well and have reached a good standard. I've done some reversing as well and have recently been practising reversing around a corner to the left. Martyn has given me some good advice about safety and positioning. My theory and hazard perception test is coming up soon and I'm practising hard as I want to pass every test first time."

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Customer Review- Conner Crossum of Gloucester.

"I joined John Lowe Driving for my driving lessons, and have had seven lessons so far from my driving instructor, Martyn Brewer. The lessons are good fun and as Martyn is a golfer, we have a lot in common, as I play golf to quite a high standard as well. I have started to learn about roundabout procedure, as Martyn and me agreed to tackle roundabouts on my next lesson. I feel I am getting on well with my driving and Martyn has something new for me each lesson."

Driving Lessons Gloucester.- Safety Code For New Drivers- Government Advice.

This code will help you drive safely in your first year after passing the driving test, when you are most vulnerable.
You should always follow the Highway Code.
  1. It’s most dangerous driving at night - don’t drive between midnight and 6am unless it’s really necessary.
  2. Don’t let passengers distract you or encourage you to take risks - tell them that you need to concentrate on the road.
  3. Never show off or try to compete with other drivers, particularly if they are driving badly.
  4. Don’t drive if you’ve drunk any alcohol or taken drugs. Some medicines can affect your ability to drive safely - always read the warning on the label.
  5. Make sure everyone’s wearing a seat belt throughout the journey.
  6. Keep your speed down - especially on bends.
  7. Be very careful driving high-powered or sporty cars - even if you learnt to drive in one.
  8. You must have insurance - it’s an offence to drive without it.
You’ll lose your licence if you get 6 penalty points within 2 years of passing your first driving test. You’ll need to pass both tests to regain your driving licence.

This safety code makes a lot of sense, and to help further, don't forget your driving instructor from John Lowe Driving is available to assist you in any way, even after you have passed your driving test.
